Fiction: Bound
Bound is a collection of short stories written by writers who
live and
work in County Durham. Commissioned by New Writing North for Creative
Partnerships Durham and Sunderland, the book seeks to explore the
creative impulses of the Durham environment. Five writers were
commissioned to use the short story form to explore these ideas and to
write an essay which explored their relationship to County Durham as
writers. The writers – Wendy Robertson, Charles Fernyhough, Fadia
Faqir, Sara Maitland and Paul Magrs – all have different reasons for
coming to live or work in County Durham. Some were born in the North
East, others moved here to live and work; they have different
attachments to Durham and different experiences of the place. The
stories are small gems of contemplation and there is much to enjoy in
this imaginative undertaking. The book itself is also a work of art.
Designed by artist Tanya Axford in conjunction with designers Sumo, the
Bound book also turns itself into a sculpture as you read it. Have fun.
Bound has won a number of awards for its innovative design, including a
Gold award for 'Best use of print' and 'THE BIG F' award for best
in show at Fresh Grand Prix 2006.
