  • 24 May 2013Cuckoo Quarterly Prize
    We’re very pleased to announce the launch of the Cuckoo Quarterly Prize, an award of £50 which will be given to the best piece of writing in every issue. The prize recipient will be chosen by the Editorial Committee, the panel of young writers who select submissions, edit work and direct the magazine. To launch the award, the committee have chosen Dawn by Hazel Atkinson (published in Issue 6) to receive the first award.

  • 10 May 2013 Newcastle Writing Conference opens door for new writers
    We’d like to thank everyone who helped make the inaugural Newcastle Writing Conference, which took place in Northumbria University’s Great Hall last weekend, such a great success. Nearly 150 writers attended the conference and heard a range of speakers discussing topics ranging from how to break into writing, to ‘what’s hot and what’s not’ in publishing today.

  • 26 April 2013Call for submissions: Voicewalks
    The Durham Book Festival team at New Writing North is working with the Hearing the Voice project at Durham University on a special series of events which will take place during this year’s festival. As part of the project, we’d like to invite writers of all levels to contribute to a pamphlet of poetry, prose and non-fiction in English about hearing voices when walking in the city.

    Cuckoo Review is a new online arts and culture magazine written by young people. Young writers aged 15-23 will have an opportunity to cut their journalistic teeth and offer their opinions on the latest cultural offerings in the region and beyond.

  • 12 April 2013Cuckoo group scores radio commission
    The Cuckoo Young Writers group in Newcastle has just been awarded their first commission from spoken-word supremos Apples and Snakes NE. The group has won one of ten commissions, which challenge poets and producers to write and produce an hour-long spoken word radio show which will be broadcast via digital station Basic FM.

  • 3 April 2013John Hegley has Cuckoo support for Sunderland show
    Join comedy’s Poet Laureate John Hegley on Friday 14 June for a wild word wonderland at Sunderland’s Bonded Warehouse for a show based on his new collection of poetry and prose: Peace, Love & Potatoes. John will be joined by Sunderland poet Sylvia Forrest and three young poets from the North East, including two Cuckoo Young Writers. The next day, John will be running a free writing and drawing workshop in Sunderland Central Library for young people from Sunderland aged 12-19.

  • 2 April 2013Full programme announced for Newcastle Writing Conference

    We’ve just confirmed the last speakers at the inaugural Newcastle Writing Conference, and the full programme is now available online at http://nclwritingconference.eventbrite.co.uk. The conference is a must-attend event for writers across the north of England who are either new to writing or have only recently been published and would like to learn more about the industry they’re now working in.

  • 28 March 2013Man Asian win for Newcastle publisher Myrmidon
    Tan Twan Eng has won the Man Asian Literary Prize for The Garden of Evening Mists, which was published by Newcastle-based Myrmidon Books. It's only the second time the prize has been awarded to a novel originally written in English and the first time a northern press has won this award.

New Writing North’s office mates Mslexia, the national magazine for women writers, will be recruiting two or more team members in the near future to replace one key person who is relocating, and for help in developing and launching several new projects. The team is especially interested in hearing from well-organised marketing and sales self-starters with strong digital skills and an enthusiasm for and knowledge of the UK writing scene.

  • 22 March 2013Read Regional author Annabel Pitcher wins Waterstones Children's Book Prize

    We were delighted to learn that Annabel Pitcher was last night named both the winner in the teen fiction category and the overall winner of the 2013 Waterstones Children's Book Prize for her second novel, Ketchup Clouds. Annabel is one of this year's Read Regional authors, and has been touring libraries across the North East and Yorkshire since September, talking to readers about her first young adult novel, My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece.

  • 15 March 2013Let’s Talk Libraries: update
    Last week, Newcastle Council met to vote on the full budget proposals. The cuts to the libraries were passed, but it seems that five of the ten libraries will continue to exist in some form, either through community groups (Jesmond and High Heaton) or through other local partnerships (Fenham, Blakelaw and Cruddas Park).

    An intrepid troop of young writers from Hexham have just embarked on their Bronze Arts Award with New Writing North. As well as attending the fortnightly Cuckoo writing group, over the coming months they’ll be reviewing events and interviewing authors at Hexham Book Festival, getting involved in the Festival of the North East via the Dear Angel project, and trying their hand at leading some workshops too.

    On Saturday 9 February, we attended some events at libraries faced with closure in Newcastle. You can see some of the photos from the event at Cruddas Park library in Elswick here. Across the region, in libraries big and small, authors, poets, actors, musicians and storytellers came together to celebrate these wonderful institutions which so many frequent and enjoy.

    New Writing North is looking to expand our network of writers who work with young people. In 2013, we hope to increase the amount of work we do with young writers, which includes our out-of-school Cuckoo Young Writers programme (including fortnightly writing groups, summer schools and our online literary magazine Cuckoo Quarterly) and our work in schools.

    Are you a young person with strong views about the state of the world? Are you worried about getting a job, angry about tuition fees or have something to say about the effects of cuts on your local area? We want to know what you think!
    In the coming months, writer Jake Campbell will be running a series of free writing workshops for young people (14+) which will give you a chance to make your voice heard about the issues that are important to you. Whether you’re a keen writer or just want to try something new, this is a chance to get your ideas and opinions down on paper and be included in an “Uncertain Times” anthology.

    We were delighted to hear this morning that Tina Gharavi, creative director of Bridge + Tunnel Productions, has been nominated for a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for the film I Am Nasrine, which New Writing North helped develop in its early stages.

    Our Cuckoo Young Writers groups are starting 2013 with a new look and new way of working. We’ve now got a team of roving Cuckoo writers who will move between the groups each month, which will mean our young writers have more variety and a greater opportunity to try out different forms and genres of writing.
