The People's Play 2010

The People’s Play Award 2010

Win £2,000 and see your play produced this autumn

Deadline for entries: Thursday 25 March 2010

New Writing North and the People’s Theatre Company are proud to announce the launch of the 2010 People’s Play Award. The award is run to find an exciting new play that will be produced for one week in the studio theatre at the People’s Theatre in Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne, in November 2010. The winning writer will receive an award of £2,000.

The competition aims to discover and develop new writers for theatre and is only open to writers who have not yet received a full professional production of their work on the stage.

The People’s Theatre is one of the largest, oldest and most prestigious amateur theatres in the country. Many of its members go on to professional theatre work. The theatre has always been keen to promote new writing and the People’s Play is now a well-established event in its calendar. For more information about The People's Theatre, see www.ptag.org.uk.

Winning The People’s Play is a great first step to establishing a career as a professional writer. Former winners who have gone on to write professionally include Alison Carr, Peter Straughan (who recently wrote the screenplay for The Men Who Stare at Goats, starring George Clooney) and Carina Rodney.

The award is funded by New Writing North and The People’s Theatre and is open to writers who live and work within the Arts Council England North East region (Tyne and Wear, Northumberland, Tees Valley and County Durham).

HOW TO ENTER

YOUR ELIGIBILITY

Geographical eligibility
You may enter for the award if you are permanently resident in Tyne and Wear, the Tees Valley, County Durham or Northumberland, and have lived here for at least one year. The awards are supported by Arts Council England North East and as such are designated for this region of the UK.

YOUR ENTRY
The work that you submit must be your own and be original work. Writers may only enter one script for the award. The play that you enter for the award must be a new play that has not yet received a professional production. If you are concerned that your work may not be eligible, please contact us in advance of submitting your work.

HOW TO APPLY
Please follow the instructions below to enter your work.

Covering letter
The covering letter must include the following information:
a) Your name, address, email and contact numbers.
b) A short summary of your experience of a writer and information about the play that you have entered. We appreciate that for many early-career writers this might not be extensive, but what you write will help the judges understand what stage you are at with your work and to judge your writing accordingly.

A printed copy of your play
Your submission must be of a full play script, not a partial script, synopsis or proposal. It should be printed single-side, with page numbers, and loose leaf. The typeface should be no smaller than 12 point. If you wish to bind the script pages together, please just use elastic bands or string so we can undo it easily.

Equality Monitoring Form
You also need to submit a copy of the Equality Monitoring Form with your entry (click here to download a form to fill in).

Proof of name and address
You also need to send one photocopy of a utility bill or other document that confirms your name and address. Please do not send bank statements or other documents that may contain sensitive information.

Stamped Addressed Envelope
If you require your script to be returned to you after the judging process, please include a SAE big enough to contain your work with your entry. Every effort will be made to return scripts following the judging.

YOUR AGREEMENT

By entering your work for the awards you are agreeing to the following:

1. That the work you are submitting is your own original work. New Writing North withholds the right to withdraw an award if it is discovered that a writer has fabricated any information in their application.

2. That the judges’ decision is final and that no correspondence can be entered into with regards to the decision-making process.

3. That if you are the winning writer you will work with both New Writing North and The People’s Theatre to ensure that your play is ready for production. This may include working with a script advisor, re-writing and attending some of the rehearsal period of the play this autumn.
